timberdoodle – Google Search.

On March 11, 2013 I heard the sound I had longed for since last March. The Timber doodle or Woodcock, is a small terrestrial bird of the sandpiper family.  As the light increases around Rye, things get restless.  This bird epitomizes the primitive energy we all embody during the arrival of spring.  At dusk he picks a field adjacent to my house and sets up shop.  He calls out a series of buzzes, usually in a group of 30 or 40 per minute.  Then he rockets up way above the field and warbles and pops and squeaks in random and falls to field.  The sequence is repeated until dark.

Keep an ear out, if you have a field near your home.  Spring is HERE!!!!!
