Million dollar Tuna 2013

Many who either fish, consume or follow bluefin tuna, know about the tuna that sell for enormous money every year about this time.  Last year the fish sold for 750k.  This year it sold for 1.8million dollars, which is absurd.  By no means is this price reflective of true market prices for U.S. commercially exported Bluefin tuna.  When reading the articles about the most recent High-money fish, one must read through the lines and realize that it is no more than a gimmick and publicity stunt to promote business for the franchise restaurant that purchased the fish.  Unfortunately, this augmented price, only misenforms the public and allows for destructive criticism from conservationist and NGOs, who say that the current exploitation of bluefin stocks are a reflection of the price.  This is all wrong.

David Schalit is assisting ABTA on this problem and gathered a small sample of press articles thus far and with links copied below. The misperception hurts us in, at least, three direct ways: 1. the public is told the fish is threatened with extinction which is false and has been rejected by both the U.S. government and ICCAT; 2. this false message leads many to believe that shutting down the fishery is necessary for protection and 3. the perception of endangerment hurts U.S. bluefin tuna fishermen in the domestic market by reducing consumption and demand of bluefin.

The domestic market is often extremely important to our fishery value in terms of both revenue and employment. Additional problems include making governments and ICCAT look irresponsible for not implementing regulations to conserve the resource and creating petitions and boycotts of restaurants and other markets offering bluefin. All the negative publicity from these false stories creates further pressure on governments to overly restrict the fishery. There is also a public health issue if the consumer passes on a meal of nutricious fish and opts for a less healthy non fish meal.
Ideally, we would like to see NOAA issue a press release exposing the marketing gimmick and noting the very restrictive international programs to conserve and manage Northern Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. Direct excerpts from the 2012 ICCAT stock assessment demonstrating continuing biomass increases and the complexity of conservation and management will assure that the NOAA distributed information is unbiased and current.
I will forward in a separate email a New York Times published note from David Schalit rejecting the premise of most of the articles relating to the annual Japanese marketing gimmick.
All of us at ABTA appreciated the effort you began last year by your comments to the press (upon our request) to set the record straight on the advertising ploy and recent improved bluefin stock assessment situation.
